An early American favorite children's puzzle, the Ox Yoke is perhaps the best known of all historical "switch-over" puzzles. Popular in the late 1800s to early 1900s,
Object: Move a wooden ring (or bead) from one string loop to the other (without untying knots or cutting the string!). In other words, bring the two beads together so they touch.
The puzzle looks impossible, because the rings cannot fit through the hole in the yoke. Allow your child to be a hero to others in the room, as she does the impossible (Madagascar 3 anyone?).
Our kids learn by watching us. Do the puzzle yourself, and don't be afraid to have them watch you struggle. This is an opportunity to show them (rather than tell them) how you handle frustration and utilize patience and concentration in the face of the seemingly impossible.
